Blog of the day

by William Paz

There’s this Turkish club night in Berlin that’s nothing like anything I’ve seen before. Once a month at legendary punk haunt SO36, the Turkish and Arab queer communities and their fans fill up the Gayhane party to dance to Eastern beats and pop anthems. It’s sweaty and full of hot hairy guys who move their hips a lot, a bit like Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”-kinda thing. It is at this party where I’ve lived out my hottest fantasies, even if some came with a sobering and bitter aftertaste.

Dandy of the Week: Klaus Nomi

Blog of the day

by Jake Boyer

Each week, Dandy Dicks will highlight a key figure in gay culture, be it past or present. These men are what we consider true Dandies, advancing our ideals of gay men everywhere and doing it with lasting influence and style. This week’s installment is on Klaus Nomi, an icon of early new wave who this week would have turned 72. He revolutionized the avant-garde for a new generation of club kids and was one of the first celebrities to draw attention to AIDS.

Fashion Friday: Converse

Blog of the day

by Kyle Eckert

As adored as they were loathed, gone is the love-hate relationship nearly everyone had with a pair of Chuck Taylors at some point in their life. Well... kinda. This past summer, Converse announced a redesign of their iconic sneaker. And it only took a brisk 98 years. Literally. The 1917 Massachusetts creation was an attempt at grabbing the basketball market’s attention by carrying the name of 20-year-old Charles Hollis "Chuck" Taylor, a well known player at the time. Blissfully unaware of the technology to come, the shoe thrived and continued being worn for both fashion- and sport-related function year after year.

Britain’s Coastal Gay Capital - How Brighton rose to take the crown

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Blog of the day

by Dan Ayres

British coastal towns are seldom known for their glamour. Picture old biddies rattling along the cobbles, unspeakably beige fish and chips soaking sadly in vinegar, teenagers in tracksuits huddling beneath a half-rotten pier chugging cheap cider, all to a sinister soundtrack emanating from the trippy never-ending neon swirl of the obligatory carousel. But there is one city on the south coast that boasts all these essential facets and a whole lot more. Beautiful Brighton is widely considered the gay capital of Britain (though Manchester takes the glittery tiara for the north of England) and plays host to one of the biggest and most colorful gay pride parades in the country every summer. But how did a once sleepy fishing village rise to become Britain’s fabulous gay capital on the coast?

ABOUT US

WHAT IS DANDY DICKS AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

And who the hell am I? If you’ve been following the blog at all, you may have wondered out of which horny hole this perverted punk has stepped. I won’t reveal too much – a bit of mystery is sexy, right? But a few things may be in order.

First, I was born in that part of the world that most people think is actually Canada, but it’s not. I was born in Alaska. Who would have thought that place could produce more than oil and Sarah Palin – two decidedly unsexy things.

Second, I’m no stranger to sex on screen. I appeared in two arty porn films with DVD releases: one in San Francisco and one here in Berlin. There may be other footage of me out there, but if so, I don’t know where. And yup, I moved to Berlin from gay ol’ San Francisco, where I learned to be a proper fag and how to be a writer all at the same time.

There’s more from San Francisco coming your way via Dandy Dicks, so stay tuned.

But I left San Francisco. And took my heart with me. Five years now in Berlin and I can’t think of a better place to be. I’ve been making it here as a writer ever since and I’m happy to report there’s no going back.

I think I’ve given you enough of the basics. More you’ll just have to find out either through this blog or a little Google. But I hope with that you stick around Dandy Dicks – for this blog and of course, the boys!
