Already fierce: Snax and his “Up and Coming Children”

Snax, aka Paul Bonomo, always was and remains a busy lady. An international purveyor of sleaze, dreams and beats, his travels have taken him from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco to New York to Berlin, adopting different guises along the way, but always  guided by his own gift, his girl, his muse: music. Hitting stages with punk rock band Fagbash, later with disco-pop duo Captain Comatose and now as just his badass self, decadent revelers and fans from around the world know one other thing about him as well: He’s one hell of a performer.

Currently working on his fourth LP, he’s also launched a songwriting and production team with Mavin LeMagass, succinctly called BonomoLeMagass, writing and producing for artists and creating a whole new generation of up-and-coming children. Which is fitting, because it’s now that we at Dandy Dicks are all hot and bothered to announce that we will have the exclusive debut of his new music video “150%” from his most recent EP, Up and Coming Children. We can assure you it will be fierce. Be sure to check the site on Friday, September 18, to catch Snax’s newest visual and musical sensation.

But first, we had a chat with the prolific artist, offering some insight to tide you over until the debut.

Who inspires you and what inspires you to do your music?

Where do I start? Survival, sexuality, living in the moment, sleaze, relationships, cult of personality. Naturally I reflect on whatever is going on in my life at the time, but I think lyrically and performance-wise it's a ramped-up version of all that. To me, bit of mystery mixed with realness make for a fierce recipe.

Your roots are in punk rock and the SF punk band Fagbash. How does one go from punk to ecstatic, decadent disco? Do you see a link between punk and disco?

Actually, my roots are The Beatles, The Stones, and 70s rock when I was a little tot (I had a lot of older brothers), then discovering soul, R&B and hip-hop on Washington, D.C. radio during puberty and then fusing that all into my idea of queer punk. It's funny, because when I was getting into queer punk and started Fagbash, I was looking for gay musical heroes and trying be one myself. Then I realized that there was already Freddie Mercury as well as all the gay Blatino DIY house producers who were making dance music for the street. So I thought to myself, wow, now that's my idea of gay punks!

Your most recent EP is called Up and Coming Children. Who and what are the up and coming children in your mind?

People who aren't intimidated into doing the things the so-called “right way”. I generally like to collaborate with people who aren't tech-y. Gear slut producers and vinyl junkie purists generally get on my nerves. I'd much rather hang with artists who have that spark of creativity no matter what equipment they have or how they bring it... as long as they bring it. That's the essence of being up-and-coming, you dig?

You made the upcoming video, “150%” with your husband. Is working with someone you’re involved with easy, hard, different…?

It was quite organic. Actually when we first got together, I was thrilled Björn didn't have artistic or musical pursuits, as that can get really sticky and competitive. But we both have very strong opinions about music. You should see when we get ready to go out. It's always a fight over who is in charge of the pre-party tunes! Eventually it just got to the point where we wrote songs for fun. I wanted to make a video for “150%”, so Björn decided to hop on board. We basically taught ourselves the process and the software and went for it. Of course there was some creative tension, but that's what makes good art. The result can only be described as a schizo-phoric ride into therapy gone wrong.

ABOUT US

WHAT IS DANDY DICKS AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

And who the hell am I? If you’ve been following the blog at all, you may have wondered out of which horny hole this perverted punk has stepped. I won’t reveal too much – a bit of mystery is sexy, right? But a few things may be in order.

First, I was born in that part of the world that most people think is actually Canada, but it’s not. I was born in Alaska. Who would have thought that place could produce more than oil and Sarah Palin – two decidedly unsexy things.

Second, I’m no stranger to sex on screen. I appeared in two arty porn films with DVD releases: one in San Francisco and one here in Berlin. There may be other footage of me out there, but if so, I don’t know where. And yup, I moved to Berlin from gay ol’ San Francisco, where I learned to be a proper fag and how to be a writer all at the same time.

There’s more from San Francisco coming your way via Dandy Dicks, so stay tuned.

But I left San Francisco. And took my heart with me. Five years now in Berlin and I can’t think of a better place to be. I’ve been making it here as a writer ever since and I’m happy to report there’s no going back.

I think I’ve given you enough of the basics. More you’ll just have to find out either through this blog or a little Google. But I hope with that you stick around Dandy Dicks – for this blog and of course, the boys!
